Announcing our contributions to the BalticLSC project: Computing power supply supporting businesses in the Baltic Sea region

After several meetings and workshops, BalticLSC (Baltic Large-Scale Computing) and Golem are ready to announce the collaboration between the two.

BalticLSC is an international consortium comprised of different technology, business development and science parks partners from eight Baltic Sea region countries.

The consortium aims at developing a universal and practical solution — the BalticLSC Environment: a hardware Platform and easy-to-use Software for smaller companies and institutions to improve their access to super computing resources and necessary expertise. The Consortium has been assembled under the Interreg BSR programme and is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). More information on their website.

Golem is a contributing partner in the BalticLSC project, which nowadays means we are exchanging knowledge and expertise, collaborating, attending workshops and meetings and other early-stage contributions.

This knowledge exchange concerns both technical and business issues, including:

• Architectures of distributed systems
• Security and integrity of computations
• Distributed market for computing power
• Definition of business models for large scale and distributed computing

However, the contributions are not restricted to the four areas mentioned above. There are many research and development verticals of overlap between Golem and BalticLSC and the scope of the collaboration continues to take shape over time.

As this collaboration advances, we are together looking into potential use cases that fit into the distributed computing models of both Golem and BalticLSC. This includes active reach out to companies (mainly SMEs) expected to bring some new interesting use cases.

As for future plans, we are considering interfacing a Golem and BalticLSC solution to create a common big space of computing resources. The expected outcomes of this cooperation are to be determined, since the BalticLSC project is in its early stage.
